Last month was one of the wettest months in Texas and with the rains come potentially serious issues around swimming pool drains. As with everything in the pool construction industry, there is both a right and wrong, cheap and expensive way to prevent drainage problems:
The primary goal of proper drainage is to remove the water and put it where it belongs: on the street! Some pool builders recommend a product called "Deck-O-Drain," which is a large, plastic expansion that joins channels of water to the side of the pool deck, with hope that the water will automatically take the natural path of drainage.
However, to drain water from your yard the right way, we recommend taking area drains (4-inch pipes with drain heads placed within your decking) and tying them to any down spouts that can potentially come off of the roof onto your deck. These drain pipes then run all the way to your street, keeping your backyard puddle free.
As we said earlier, the proper drainage system will cost some money - $1,400 more on average than the Deck-O-Drain - but we think it's a great investment compared to flooding your house.
