Winter Pool Tips

January 2012

In this first issue of 2012 we will cover three main topics. First, we will discuss proper visual inspections of your heater. Secondly, after your heater inspection is complete you should test firing your heater. Once you have completed both heater inceptions and test firing we want you to focus on your Ozonator. January is a perfect time to check your Ozone UV bulbs. This is the time to keep a close eye on all of these three things due to the cold weather. Take a few minutes out of your busy day to keep your pool safe and happy.

Visual Inspection of Heater

Mice in Pool HeaterIt is not uncommon to find small animals or critters inside your heater during the winter. It's cold outside and the small animals are looking for a warm place to hide. Your heater might just be the right home for them. So, inspect your heater for animals and debris. Check for mice, rats, raccoons and any other critters that might have made themselves at home inside your heater. These critters may be cute but they will chew up components and will nest inside your heater if you don't inspect your heater regularly. Having small animals inside your heater may cause a fire hazard for your home. According to Pool & Spa News, "it's important to inspect the wires throughout the heater - especially those that feed into the ignition and the main circuit board - before starting it up." In addition, when you're checking your heater for critters, remove any leaves or debris that might have fallen in as this can easily clog your heater during the winter due to the absence of airflow. A safe heater is a happy heater.

Test Fire Your Heater & Check for Leaks

Jandy Pool HeaterAfter you have completed your inspection for critters and removed all debris, your next step is to test fire your heater. Always test fire your heater after you have made your visual inspections. A few things to look for when test firing your heater include, checking for error codes on the display and looking for water leaks around the heater. Make note of any error codes if they show up in the display and contact your pool professional with those error codes for help.

Checking for leaks is a visual inspection. After you have test fired your heater, take a few moments and look for any water leaks. We recommend test firing your heater two times per month. This will help keep the critters away and it will help maintain the longevity of your heater.

Ozonator

An Ozonator is a water purifying system which is a perfect addition to any new or existing pool for the cleanest water possible. Ozone actively breaks down non-living waste products in pool water which can combine with chlorine to form unhealthy by-products that can irritate skin and have been linked to asthma and other ailments.  Use of ozone reduces the demand for pool chemicals by up to 70% and allows the chlorine in the pool to work more effectively as a disinfectant.

During the month of January we recommend you check your UV bulb to see if it is working. If the UV bulb is not lit, you will need to replace it with a new UV bulb. Changing your UV bulb is not a complicated process. You may purchase your UV bulbs through us or through any pool professional.
